Sports injury FAQ
When should I see a doctor for a sports injury?
If pain, swelling, or limited movement lasts more than a few days, or you can’t bear weight or use the joint, get evaluated to avoid making the injury worse.
Will I need surgery?
Most sports injuries are treated without surgery using physical therapy and pain management.
Is my sports injury covered by insurance?
That depends on how it happened. An injury during a work activity is billed to Workers’ Comp, and one arising from a motor vehicle accident to New York No-Fault, which means $0 out of pocket for covered patients. Recreational sports injuries go through your health insurance, and our team confirms your benefits before care begins.
When can I go back to playing?
Return is based on what the injured tissue can tolerate rather than on the calendar — full pain-free motion, strength restored compared with the other side, and the ability to run, cut, or throw without symptoms. Going back before those are met is the most common reason an injury recurs. Your plan includes staged return-to-sport criteria so the decision is measurable rather than a guess.
Should I play through the pain?
Pain that increases during activity, or lingers into the next day, is a signal to be evaluated rather than pushed through. Some discomfort is normal during rehabilitation, but swelling, giving way, locking, or being unable to bear weight are not. Continuing on an injured joint or tendon frequently turns a manageable problem into a longer one.
